The 3rd annual Mount Sinai Health Hackathon will take place on October 19-21 2018. It is an exciting 48-hour multidisciplinary competition focused on creating novel technology solutions for problems in healthcare. This year’s theme is Rare Diseases.
The Rare Diseases Act of 2002 defines rare diseases strictly according to prevalence and is specifically any disease or condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States or about 1 in 1,500 people. Most forms of cancer in children are considered rare since so few children are affected. The Global Gene Project estimates 300 million people worldwide are affected by a rare disease. It is estimated that there are 5,000-7,000 types of rare diseases in total, most of which are genetic.
